Abstract

The digital economy of Pakistan is facing a major issue in aligning with General Data Protection Regulation requirements, and the gaps in compliance requirements and enforcement capabilities are critical in this case. Such issues as the lack of proper legislation to protect data, insufficient equipment, lack of regulatory control, and ignorance among companies about international data protection standards are amongst the main challenges. The lack of an extensive data protection system in line with the GDPR poses obstacles to business operations in Pakistan that want to transact with the European Union markets. Also, limited resources of regulatory agencies, inadequate enforcement mechanisms, and a lack of understanding of data privacy law only worsen such issues. Small and medium businesses are the ones that are more impacted by the difference between compliance capacities, as they are not in a position to comply with the GDPR requirements financially and technically. Although Pakistan is taking the right steps in data protection by passing the Personal Data Protection Bill, there is still a significant gap in the realisation of the law, the ability to implement it, and the compatibility with international standards, which is an essential issue for the competitiveness of the digital economy and the protection of citizen data in the country.
